Privacy Policy
Hello, how are you doing? Please, have a seat. Would you like something to drink? I'd like to talk to you about Hampr's privacy policy. Rather than spout some legal-sounding jibberish, I thought I'd explain Hampr's various policies in plain English. That way you know exactly what you're getting. Note that not all of these policies are "privacy"-related; this area just seems as good as any to list the various Hampr policies.
- Hampr will probably exist indefinitely. Hampr was created primarily as my own personal service, and represents a solution to a 10-year-old wishlist item. It's probably not going away any time soon.
- Your bookmarks will not be shared with anyone willingly. With the exception of various high-level global statistics ("there are over 2.5 million bookmarks in the Hampr system", "620 users have bookmarked YouTube links", etc), no information about your Hampr bookmark information will be shared with anyone.
- While Hampr is currently a purely personal bookmark system, it may be expanded in the future to add "community" functionality. If this happens, any bookmarks you share with the world must be explicitly authorized by you.
- Your personal details will never be shared with anyone willingly. I won't sell your email address to spammers. In fact, at the moment none of your personal details are asked when you register. I may in the future ask for your email address and/or name (via OpenID) for the purpose of sending site status updates etc, but it will be purely voluntary, and declining to provide that information will not prevent you from using Hampr in any way.
- Hampr's server is located in the state of California, US, and is administered from the state of Nevada, US, and is under the jurisdiction of state and federal laws. This is why I said "willingly" above; I still must comply with court-ordered subpoenas, even if they contradict other points in this policy.
- Hampr is not going to try to hold your data hostage. The "Export Bookmarks" function will remain as long as Hampr remains operational. In the unlikely event that Hampr were to shut down, I would do my best to ensure that you get a final export of your data.
- Hampr does not currently display ads. While I can't promise that the Hampr site will always remain ad-free, I promise that I would try to keep any ads as unobtrusive and tasteful as possible. Probably nothing more than a Google text ads bar or a "Site sponsored by XYZ" blurb. Remember that, at the moment, Hampr is paid for entirely out of my pocket.
- The Hampr Firefox Extension will never display ads. Even if I were to go back on my word, the extension is an Open Source product, and could be modified as desired.
